The last rays of sunset on a yew tree on Wenlock Edge, Shropshire.
Standing guard through the centuries - the last rays of sunset fall across the twisted roots of an ancient yew tree on Wenlock Edge. I couldn’t resist stopping to photograph this gnarled old veteran when I spotted it clinging to a near-vertical slope above a holloway. The name of the path comes from the Old English ‘hola weg’ - meaning sunken road - and it is created by the passage of people and animals over the years. I’ve photographed many of Shropshire’s ancient yew trees in my time, so it’s always good to find another one.
