Stark and otherworldly - this is sunset at Mitchell’s Fold stone circle on Stapeley Hill, near the Stiperstones.

History and a witch's fate on Stapeley Hill

It was built more than 3,000 years ago and is said to be named after an evil witch who was turned to stone.

The witch was then surrounded by a circle of standing stones to ensure that she could never escape.

I got this shot at the tail end of a blizzard, when the sky took on a dramatic golden glow that made a spectacular contrast with the snow-covered landscape.

And yes – I can confirm that it was every bit as cold as it looks!
